Site:  Monte Vista Christian School is the site for our camp. Situated in the heart of the beautiful Monterey Bay area, the 100 acre, spacious and picturesque campus nestles in the foothills of the Santa Cruz mountains. Along with an excellent horse facility, which includes two arenas, two barns, numerous paddocks, a classroom, and beautiful riding trails, there is a junior Olympic-size swimming pool.  Campers will enjoy outdoor living in tent cabins adjacent to the equestrian facility.

A Typical Day:  Sunday afternoon includes registration from 2pm to 3:30pm, campus tour and orientation, games, and dinner.  After dinner:  learning horse safety rules, grooming, saddling, and a riding skills assessment.  Campers are then divided into western and English groups and are further divided by skill level for the next week’s lessons.  By now it's time for an evening snack and songs around the campfire, then excited campers are off to bed.

Bright and early in the morning, the campers wake up the counselors and the day starts with breakfast in the cafeteria located just beyond the equestrian facility.  The campers help with stable chores and then groom and care for their horses while watchful wranglers make sure they stay safe.  While one group has their riding lessons, the other group learns all about caring for a horse, including horse and tack parts, colors and breeds, feeding, and health care.  After a snack break at about 10:00, the two groups switch.  Before the campers know it, it's time for lunch.

After lunch and a rest period, campers choose two electives.  They can take a trail ride, play a game on horse back, make horsey arts and crafts, go swimming, try roping, play horse shoes, and more.  After electives, campers walk to the gymnasium and take showers.

Dinner is served at 5:00.  After letting dinner settle, group games are played.  Favorites include: capture the flag, commando, dodge ball, and volley ball.  As darkness falls, campers gather around a warm campfire, singing songs, roasting marshmallows, and talking about their day.

On Saturday, parents are invited to see their campers show off their new riding skills in a horse show at 10am.

Monte Vista has been offering horsemanship camps for over twenty-five years, and with each and every year the kids enjoy more, learn more, and return each summer.
