  • Alum Devony Smith will appear in New York City's Library concert February 21, 2013.
  • Alum Angeline Petronijevic received a callback for LA opera.  Her audition is January 28, 2011.
  • Alum Amber McDonald will appear in Turandot by Puccini this 2011 season with West Valley Opera, Palo Alto.
  • Two of Monte Vista Christian School Performing Arts alumni have been accepted into top music schools in the USA as of March 2012.  Devony Smith has been accepted into the Bard College Conservatory of Music and Christian Pursell has been accepted into the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.  Both of these institutions are ranked in the top 5% of music conservatories in the country and consistently produce world class performers.
  • Alum Royen Kent was cast in Sondheim’s “A Little Night Music” in the role of Henri Egerman (Supporting Lead) with Chicago’s Writer’s Theater.  The show will run from May 1-July 8, 2012.  While at MV, Royen was a member of the Chamber Choir, The Master’s Voice, MVCS 4 (quartet), and played the Dentist in MVCS production of “Little Shop of Horrors.”
  • Senior Kathleen Dunlap-DeMarco was accepted in AMDA Conservatory of the Performing Arts.  She is a member of Drama Class, Chamber Choir, Vocal Techniques and a supportive lead in our 2012 musical "Thoroughly Modern Millie."  AMDA is one of America’s premier conservatories for the performing arts, and is recognized throughout the industry for its rich history and tradition of launching some of the most successful careers in theatre, film and television.

The Monte Vista Mass Choir (all three levels of High School Choir combined) was awarded UNANIMOUS SUPERIOR. The Monte Vista Concert Choir (Chamber and Chorus) was awarded UNANIMOUS SUPERIOR. The Monte Vista Chamber Choir was awarded UNANIMOUS SUPERIOR. The Monte Vista Chorus was awarded SUPERIOR.
The highest rating possible is a UNANIMOUS SUPERIOR. The ratings is giving when all three adjudicators score the performance as SUPERIOR. This is the most UNANIMOUS SUPERIORS MVCS has ever received at the CCS.

American Choral Directors Association California Regional Honor Choir

These students were selected by audition for acceptance in the Regional Honor Choir:  Savannah Wade; Meggie Nell; Kayley Wilson; Stephanie Blenderman; Taylore Lobo; Kristi Matsuoka; Lourdes Gomez; Julia Chandler; Jack Wilkins.  Auditions  included a prepared Italian song or aria, range testing, unaccompanied vocal exercises: major scale, major and minor triads, chromatic scale, pitch matching patterns and sight singing. MVCS students comprise about 8% of the coastal choir. This is an extra special year because MVCS vocal arts is hosting the event with rehearsals at Cabrillo College and a free performance on November 19th at 12:30 PM at Twin Lakes Church in Aptos. The guest conductors were chosen by Dr. Dehner and include his conducting professor, Dr. John Dickson, America’s leading choral pedagogue.

Monte Vista Christian School students Tenor Jack Wilkins and Mezzo-Soprano Savannah Wade from Dehner Voice Students won the Carmel Bach Festival Young Artist Competition.  Both Savannah and Jack presented arias from Handel's MESSIAH.

Honorable Mention award won by the MVCS Baroque Ensemble:  Jina Kim and Alex Lee (violins), ulie Tao and Jason Wu (viola), Jin Yang and Cirl Lee (cello), and  Shizuka Imaeda (harpsichord).  They have been asked to play a special concert at UCSC on April 2 or May 4.

High School Quartet Competition, March 2011

Jack Wilkins, Daniel Smith, Ian King and Dane Odegaard, members of our Four Score and Seven Measures Ago Quartet, won 3rd place at the annual High School Quartet Contest on March 19 in Santa Clara. The contest is sponsored by the Far Western District of the Barbershop Harmony Society, and was open to students from Hawaii, California, Nevada, Arizona and Southern Utah. Monte Vista received a cash prize of $200 for our music program.

Mary Whitaker is in Manhattan this week because she was invited for a live audition at the Juilliard School.  Jasmine Daniele is in Boston this week because she was invited for a live audition at the Berkeley School of Music. These schools are the top ranked programs in the USA.

Camarata Singers Scholarship, May 2010
The Camerata Singers of Salinas awarded a $500 scholarship to Mary Whitaker.  Mary has sung in the Camerata Futures program for three consecutive years and was a soloist in Robert Ray’s “Gospel Mass” last March. Mary is currently visiting colleges and preparing audition materials and the scholarship award will assist her in these endeavors.

Competitions 
Mary Whitaker advanced to the national round of the Classical Singer Magazine Competition, and to the semi-finals of the Mondavi competition.

*ACSI Musicale Festival--These vocal arts students received Command Performances at the ACSI Musicale Festival in Sacramento on March 5: Chamber Choir, choir; The Master’s Voice, large ensemble; Christiana Meeks, classical soloist; Shannon McBane, classical soloist. A Command Performance denotes that their scores were unanimous Superior and that the adjudicator recommended the performer(s) for an evening performance in the festival concert. A participating school can only receive four Command Performances. Monte Vista is the only school that received four commands this year.

*Christiana Meeks was selected as one of the four sopranos accepted to the Boston Conservatory for Fall 2010. Boston Conservatory is the number two conservatory in the nation just under Juilliard. There were 2,000 auditions for four spots.


*Mary Whitaker performed on March 28 at the Mondavi Young Artists Winner’s Concert. They will record and post the concert.

*Ten top theatre students were inducted into the International Thespian Society on February 24: Chris Adams, Nicolle Adams, Brett Bolich, Bethany Cannon, Matthew Dantzler, Connor Lee, Katie McDonald, Jackson Meineke, Kaito Tahira, and Savannah Wade. *Students who were selected by audition to perform with Honors ensembles by the California Music Educators Association:  Pooluna Chung, Jina Kim, Jaymil Landingin, Alex Lee, Cirl Lee, Maureen Mendoza, Jenny Song, Michael Victor,  Alyssa Villanueva, Jason Wu, and Jin Yang were selected for the CMEA Honor Orchestra and Band.  Merri Camburn, Euno Kim, Connor Lee, Chelsie Lilley, Janell Loredo, Christiana Meeks, Mary Whitaker, and Jim Won were selected for the CMEA Honor Choir.  They will be performing on Saturday, January 16, in Sherwood Hall in Salinas.

*Shannon McBane was cast in the Peninsula Teen Opera 2009-2010 season.  She got the duet for Marriage of Figaro:  "The Flower Duet."  She also got cast in many other scenes.

*Mary Whitaker won the Mondavi Young Artist Competition. She received a cash prize and will perform in a concert at the Mondavi Center. The Mondavi Center Young Artists Competition is open to California-resident classical pianists, instrumentalists, and chamber ensembles enrolled in grades 4-12 and vocalists enrolled in grades 9-12.

*Ruby Cook was cast as Belle in "Beauty and the Beast" with All About Theater in Santa Cruz (http://www.allabouttheatre.org/).  Alumnus Christian Pursell will appear in the same production as Gaston.

*Alumnus Sean Chapman is appearing in Palm Beach Opera’s productions of "Otello," "Don Giovanni," and "Carmen" (http://www.pbopera.org/)

*Alumnus Alexander Faulk is appearing in UCSC Production of "The Elixir of Love" by Donizetti as the tenor lead.

*Meggie Nell, an 8th grader, earned a Double Grand Champion rating with her vocal performance at the Youth Focus Talent Competition held in the Bay Area on November 14.  This event is the area’s largest and most prestigious youth talent competition, and more than 300 students competed.

*Mary Whitaker, a junior, has been selected by audition as one of seven Vocal Arts Senior Division finalists, from among more than 100 applicants, in the Mondavi Young Artists Competition at UC Davis. This makes her eligible to compete in the January finals, which will be juried by a panel of internationally renowned musicians.


*Ten high school vocal arts students were accepted by audition into the American Choral Directors Association Regional Honor Choir for 2009: Serena Buie, Merri Camburn, Ruby Cook, Jessica Hetrick, Janell Loredo, Miranda Lotts, Adam Skerrit, Savannah Wade, Mary Whitaker, and Jim Won.  They’ll perform at the ACDA concert on Thursday-Saturday, November 19-21, in Santa Rosa.

September 2009

*Miranda Lotts was chosen by the San Francisco NATS Association to present at a “Mock Audition” Workshop at the San Francisco Conservatory on Sunday, September 27th. Five other MVCS students were on the ‘reserve’ list to perform if a chosen student was absent. All of them were admitted for free to the workshop.

*Shannon McBane attended a workshop with Mr. David Ostwald, international opera dramatist, as part of the Peninsula Teen Opera program.  Mr. Ostward also visited the MVCS vocal program on September 17 to give an "Acting for Singers" workshop to the Vocal Techniques class.

August 2009

*Christiana Meeks and Christian Pursell danced at the August 2009 “Standards Under the Stars” show at Twin Lakes Church, during a vocal presentation of “So Close.”  Christiana and Christian also sang the duet “Anything You Can Do”
I."  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Gz_2KJghjw  from “Annie Get Your Gun,” and Christiana sang the solo “Somewhere” from “Les Miserables.”  Amber McDonald was also a featured soloist;  she sang “Manhattan,” a tune made famous by Ella Fitzgerald.  Merri Camburn was also a featured soloist; she sang “Something Wonderful” from "The King and I."

*Todd Scalisi was honored by the Gold Standard Chorus when they presented him with the Ken Brosius Memorial Scholarship, named for the 1989 founder of the Gold Standard Chorus.  The $500.00 scholarship is given each year to a student with demonstrated interest in four-part harmony who intends to study music at the college level.  Todd plans to attend Westmont College in Santa Barbara, preparing for a career in music.

*Christian Pursell was a featured soloist at the American Musical Theater of San Jose Honors Night. He was presented an award and performed “O What a Beautiful Morning” in San Jose at AMT for an audience of parents and student performers from 30 bay area high schools.

*The Monte Vista Christian School Performing Arts Ensembles performed at New York’s renowned Carnegie Hall on Sunday evening, March 16.  The Choir, Orchestra & Band gave a solo concert under the direction of Dr. David Anthony Dehner & Miss Shari McQueen, respectively. Also, the Choir appeared with several other ensembles from  the U.S., known collectively as the Distinguished Concerts Singers International (DCSI), in Mozart’s “Coronation” Mass. The Mass was performed with Distinguished Concerts Orchestra International;  and soloists Penelope Shumate, soprano; Doris Brunatti, mezzo-soprano; Jorge Garza, tenor; and Jorge Ocasio, bass; under the baton of maestro Jonathan Griffith.  Both the solo concert and the Mozart performance were received with prolonged applause; the DCINY staff, who arranged for the appearance, said that ensembles from Monte Vista were essential to the program’s artistic success.

*Adam Skerrit was accepted into the American Choral Directors Association All-State Choir.
He performed at the California Music Educators Association state conference in Sacramento, CA.
